Rwanda And The DRC Vow To Protect Lake Kivu’s Biodiversity While Exploiting Its Methane

Agence Ecofin

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have just signed an agreement to preserve the biodiversity of Lake Kivu in the context of the exploitation of its energy resources. The document signed between the two states aims to regulate the exploitation of methane contained in the basement of the lake to allow electricity production.

“Lake Kivu contains a great biodiversity and many natural resources which are important for human life. By exploiting the resources of the lake, we will also ensure that these activities protect biodiversity, ” said Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, the Rwandan Minister of the Environment.

The quantity of methane present in Lake Kivu will allow the production of 700 MW of electricity over a period of 55 years. The two countries which share the lake intend to exploit this resource not only for the production of electricity, but also for that of cooking gas in order to reduce deforestation.

Rwanda has already launched a feasibility study for the project and a selection process for companies wishing to set up gas exploitation platforms.
