Nigeria’s electricity supply industry recorded a deficit of about ₦222 billion in 2019. A review of the data available shows that the problem is that the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) are inefficient with collecting the revenues.
If you are interested in the data, a review to the “Key Performance Indicators report” produced by the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) shout that they were able to collect only ₦68 out of every ₦100 billed. While this is a slight improvement from the 66 percent efficiency recorded in the previous year, it is still below the benchmark required for an electricity industry such as Nigeria’s.
What can the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) do about this problem? By the way, closing the collection gaps in the industry is a fundamental precursor to achieving a stable and competitive electricity market that can deliver electricity to Nigerians.
Join us at the 45th Power Dialogue to discuss these (and other related) issues.
Dafe Akpeneye (a NERC Commissioner) will set the context with his presentation.
Ndidi Mbah (General Manager at Transmission Company of Nigeria) will moderate a discussion between Ebipere Clark (Senior Special Adviser to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria) and Uday Mishra (CEO of Jos DisCo).
